Outside the Classroom: Intangible Cultural Heritage as a Platform for Cultural Learning

Arts-ED Programme Officer Adeline Chua guest writes a piece for ICH Courier’s (Intangible Cultural Heritage Courier of Asia and the Pacific) Tenth Anniversary Special Edition. The article focuses on the organisation’s Cultural Heritage Education Programme (CHEP), introducing its objectives, approaches and its biggest programme - Youth Arts Camp.

The article uses a case study from 2017’s Youth Arts Camp, detailing the method, outcomes and challenges of running a place-based learning workshop using music as a teaching tool. During the workshop, students research, interview and shadow Chowrasta Market vendors in order to write songs about the skills, routines and issues faced by them.
