Toolkit: An Asset-based Approach to Community Development
English
In 2024, using the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach with the Lenggong community, we mapped the area’s history, cultural assets, and community stories and developed them into five unique thematic heritage walks. We also trained local story tellers who later used the heritage tour to raise awareness and educate others about Lenggong’s heritage.
Drawing upon experiences in Lenggong in 2024 and our past community works, we consolidated and documented our methodology in this book, authored by Janet Pillai, edited by Dr. Matt Benson and Tan Pek Leng. The toolkit introduces approaches for identifying community assets and facilitating participatory development processes.
This toolkit contains general guidance and adaptive resources for those who wish to learn about an asset-based approach to sustainable development. It focuses on how to facilitate communities in rural and urban landscapes to utilise their community's assets to navigate changes, challenges and opportunities for the betterment of their human settlement, environment and community well-being.
Audiences who might find this toolkit useful would be community development workers or cultural workers attached to Non-Government Orgamigations (NGOs), as well as administrators and project managers of development agencies or donor agencies who want to engage a community in development efforts.
The publication is available in both ENGLISH and MALAY
